Data Management
Exploration in the Gambia’s Petroleum sector included surveys principally comprising of geophysical and geological investigations. These investigations have been going on since the fifties and have led to the generation of huge volumes of valuable data that represent asset. These data and information assets need to be managed as envisaged by Section 5 (k) of the Petroleum Commissions Act, 2021 which mandated the commission to amongst others manage the national petroleum repository.
All Geophysical data acquired in the Gambian jurisdiction by Government, its partners are properties of the Government regarded as valuable national resource and asset. Such value can be significantly increased through a proper data management system.
The data management system currently being developed provides a framework for the collection, standardization, storage, security, maintenance, and dissemination of geophysical and geological data. The details on how this will be attained will be elaborated in a stand-alone data management policy.
Objective
To establish a comprehensive data management system and solution, that integrates the physical, digital data and information into a one stop shop, making it easily accessible to enhance exploration in the Gambia.
Data Types
These data exist in various formats, including paper copies, digital, cartridges and hard drives, covering best part of Gambian jurisdiction.
The specific objective of the Commission’s data management program is to create a comprehensive catalogue of all these geophysical and geological data, maintain a digital library that is accessible globally, and establish a physical data center that is accessible within country.

There have been five wells (Brikama, Sarakunda, Jammah-1, Samo-1 and Bambo-1) drilled over the Gambia’s jurisdiction, resulting in extensive volume of cuttings, logs and a number of cores.
